Analysis of Enjolras

his sense of hearing: Hearing and listening are important part of Enjolras's character. When he is with the Friends of the ABC, often he listens silently to their discussions. His keen sense of hearing is even more important on the barricade. Enjolras hears the guns drawn to execute Prouvaire. Enjolras hears and recognizes the sound of a grape shot being rolled up towards the barricade. Enjolras hears the sounds of a waking Paris. His sense of hearing is incredibly symbolic. Just as he can hear actual, physical noises, Enjolras is a true listener to the silent cries of the poor.

heir: Victor Hugo tells us that Enjolras is the only child of a wealthy family from southern France, clearly making him an heir to the wealth. He sacrifices his position in his family to lead the Friends of the ABC. Instead, he claims that his mother is the Republic, and although it is never stated, it is implied that his inheritance is the fight against injustice. With each new generation, new men inherit the fight for liberty, and in this generation, Enjolras inherits it.

tilted head: At Enjolras's death, it is said that he remained upright, pinned to the wall, only his head tilted. We are left to question whether it was tilted up, to smile towards heaven and eternal equality and liberty, or tilted down, to smile towards the prostrated Grantaire, the apostle laying at his master's feet.

virginity: Several times in the text, Victor Hugo acknowledges Enjolras's virginity and celibacy. He was devoted to no woman but "Patria," his country. A young, virginal man, with "apostles," that looks like a god, that fights for the "least of these," that likes to spend time alone while surrounded by his friends, that sacrifices himself for the good of all, that is killed by a state that fears him? Sounds like a Christ figure to me! And do you know what that means? He will be resurrected. Not his physical body, of course. But this to me shows that he will live again in eternal equality in heaven. Furthermore, I think this is a comment on the resilience of those fighting for liberty. Enjolras will be "resurrected" in the next generation by another man or woman that will also fight to make France free.

his inability to be distracted: In whatever he's doing, Enjolras cannot be distracted. He doesn't notice the weather or the season or flowers. He cannot be distracted when he's listening or observing something. His passion for liberty cannot be distracted by women.
